Audi has announced that it will offer a racing sports car specifically developed for customers in the form of GT3 version of the Audi R8. The Audi R8 GT3 version is able to produce 500 hp and will be available from autumn 2009.

According to Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, the R8 is the first production Audi bearing the name and genes of a successful racing sportscar and is therefore an excellent base from which to build up their first big customer sport program.

The Audi R8 GT3 conforms to the production-based GT3 regulations allowing the car to participate in numerous race series. The car comes with GT rear-wheel drive instead of the standard four-wheel drive in order to comply to the GT3 regulations.

The R8 GT3 is equipped with a newly developed six-speed sequential sports gearbox, the almost standard suspension system, a modified front end and a large rear-wing.

The Audi R8 GT3 was developed under the direction of Audi Sport and will bear the project name “R16” within Audi Sport. The first prototype of the GT3 was already tested by Audi factory driver Frank Biela and the first test races in various European racing series are scheduled for the 2009 season.
