Mazda Motor Corporation strategy, ‘Sustainable Zoom-Zoom,’ is Mazda’s new technology development direction which was announced last year. The strategy and Mazda’s Nagare design have been combined in the Mazda Kazamai Concept Crossover which was unveiled at the 2008 Moscow Motor Show. The concept crossover was designed with the Russian compact SUV in mind.
Mazda Kazamai means “swirling crosswinds” in Japanese and it is slightly larger than the current Mazda3 with a width of 1,930 mm, a length of 4,520 mm and 1,500 mm high. It has a flat roofline and very short rear overhangs, a sporty coupe look with the promise of driving fun. The Kazamai stands on 22-inch wheels with each spoke twisted and larger outside than in the center. Other features at the exterior includes five-point grille integrated into the body, small air intakes and side sill panels and rear combination light covers that help to control the wind flow and reduce drag.
Inside, the Mazda Kazamai could accommodate up to four passengers and was designed to fulfil various driver and vehicle interfaces so as to support the driver in enjoying safe and stress-free driving, with well considered human machine interface visibility and operation cockpit.
The concept achieve its aerodynamic performance through a flat floor panel, a rear diffuser, and a low roof line to make the Kazamai’s better by 10 % compared to other vehicle in its class. To reduce weight, the Mazda Kazamai is equipped with aluminum or aluminum-alloy bonnet, chassis and engine block, plastic panels, fenders and engine cover.
As far as safety is concern, the Kazamai is equipped with a lightweight body structure that could provide high levels of crash safety, roll stability control, blind spot monitoring to assist lane change, a pre-crash safety system, advanced dynamic stability control (DSC) to support the driver, soft plastic fenders and a shock-cone aluminum bonnet that is very efficient in absorbing impact energy for pedestrian safety requirements. The car also features a personal security system which monitors the area around and inside the car.
The Mazda Kazamai concept crossover is powered by a 2.0-liter DISI direct injection engine which is based on the current Mazda CX-7 which has combustion control technology and variable valve control that provide strong torque throughout the rev-range for excellent engine response and superior fuel economy. The engine is mated to a lightweight compact six-speed automatic transmission that could deliver direct feel of a manual transmission and four-wheel drive for superior traction. According to Mazda, the engine could deliver an estimated 30 % improvement in fuel consumption and emissions compared to the MZR 2.0-liter petrol engine.
